I understand that people who exercise, expect there to be some discomfort but...
Do NOT work through it - respect the pain that your body is feeling and take it easy.
High intensity exercise for this population may not be ideal due to flare ups.
Exercise is good for arthritis because when the muscle is stronger and frequently stretched, the pressure is taken off of the joints.
We previously spoke about the FITT principle - Frequency, Intensity, Time, Type
The FITT principle stays in place for EVERY exercise program. ACSM has specified a standard for each population. For arthritis, the following information is important to consider.
Frequency: 3-5 days per week
Intensity: low to moderate intensity
Time: 30 minutes, 5 times per week OR 150 minutes (start w/small bouts if necessary)
Type: Walking, swimming, bicycling, strength training, flexibility training
If two hours later, you are in pain - YOU OVER DID IT.
Avoid this!
